Electronics-Grade Cryogenic Air Separation Unit
This unit is designed to supply high-purity gaseous/liquid oxygen, nitrogen, and argon for semiconductor fabrication, photovoltaic manufacturing, and electronic chemical production. The core of its design lies in the steady-state rectification control and trace impurity removal capability of the electronics-grade cryogenic air separation unit, ensuring that feed gas meets the stringent thresholds imposed by the electronics industry for total hydrocarbons, CO₂, moisture, and other contaminants.
Basic Principle
The process follows a reverse Brayton cycle. Pre-purified air is deeply cooled to approximately –170°C to –196°C, then subjected to multiple rectification steps in structured packing columns, exploiting the boiling-point differences among oxygen, nitrogen, and argon. Through coordinated control of high-precision regulating valves and overhead condenser heat duty, product purity is stabilized at electronic-grade levels. The system integrates molecular-sieve adsorption pre-purification, turbo-expander refrigeration, and cold-box insulation, enabling the electronics-grade cryogenic air separation unit to operate with sustained low energy consumption over extended periods.
Technical Parameters (Typical Design Range)
| Parameter | Range / Value |
|---|---|
| Product purity | O₂ ≥ 99.6% (electronic grade); N₂ ≤ 1 ppm O₂; Ar ≥ 99.999% |
| Flow rate (Nm³/h) | 500 – 10,000 (modular combination available) |
| Cold-box outlet temperature | –178°C to –192°C (adjusted per product) |
| Specific energy consumption (kWh/Nm³ O₂) | 0.38 – 0.52 (including compressor and cold losses) |
| Cold-start time | ≤ 6 hours |
| Annual operation hours | ≥ 8,000 |
Flow rate and purity are inversely related; final matching is based on feed-air composition and user pressure requirements.
Temperature Range and Energy Performance
- Main heat exchanger terminal temperature difference: ≤ 3°C across full load range.
- Lower column bottom temperature: –170°C to –175°C; upper column top temperature: –192°C to –196°C.
- Overall energy consumption is approximately 12–18% lower than conventional industrial-grade units, mainly attributed to the high-efficiency boosted turbo-expander and reduced packed-column pressure drop. Cold loss is maintained below 5% of total refrigeration capacity, which is particularly advantageous in regions with high electricity costs.
Core Components and Service Life
- Main condenser: 5052 aluminium alloy or 304L stainless steel (resistant to stress corrosion).
- Packing: high-efficiency corrugated structured packing with specific surface area ≥ 500 m²/m³.
- Molecular sieve: 13X-APG grade, designed service life ≥ 6 years.
Industrial Applications
The unit serves integrated circuit wafer fabs, flat-panel display plants, photovoltaic ingot pulling operations, optical fibre preform manufacturing, and specialty gas filling stations, providing on-site gas generation or pipeline supply. It accommodates fluctuations in feed-air pressure and ambient temperature, with rapid load-changing capability (30% to 110%). Reliance on external liquid tanker transport is eliminated, reducing contamination risks during logistics.
Safety and Control System
- Integrated DCS with a separate Safety Instrumented System (SIS) for continuous monitoring of hydrocarbons and dew point.
- Built-in online acetylene analyser for liquid oxygen, with automatic blow-down and emergency shutdown logic.
- Cold-box annulus filled with perlite and protected by nitrogen blanketing.
Maintenance and Modular Layout
The skid-mounted main cold box is arranged separately from the pre-purification section to shorten on-site erection time. All instrument connections are fitted with dual block valves to facilitate online calibration. Remote diagnostic interfaces are provided for operational parameter monitoring and preventive maintenance alerts.
Selection and Supplementary Configuration
When defining the system, please specify feed-air pressure, target product types and purities, and daily load profiles. If high-purity argon or ultra-high-purity nitrogen (≤ 0.1 ppm O₂) is required, a deoxidation column or additional adsorption purification stage can be incorporated. It is advisable to reserve space for future capacity expansion.
Shenger Gas specialises in cryogenic separation technology. The electronics-grade cryogenic air separation unit is configured from a standardised design library, enabling rapid process alignment with user-defined flow and purity requirements. A project-specific cold-box piping layout is adopted to preserve mechanical integrity and thermal balance. Engineering summaries for energy consumption, footprint, and investment indicators are available upon provision of operating conditions.
