Air Separation Cold Box
Air separation cold box is a complete package containing a brazed aluminum heat exchanger within a carbon steel enclosure with structural support, insulated enclosure and internal equipment protection. Insulation of the heat exchanger and piping assemblies can be easily accomplished with perlite insulation, and the interior of the cold box will be pressurized and purged with dry nitrogen. Cold boxes minimize installation space at the commissioning site by providing a complete unit package of heat exchangers and piping components. Cold boxes are low-temperature thermal devices used in air separation plants.
working principle
The working principle of the air separation cold box includes two main processes: air separation and cooling.
1. The air separation process: The empty cold box uses polar adsorption materials to separate the main components (oxygen, nitrogen, rare gas) in the air. In this process, oxygen molecules are adsorbed, while nitrogen flows out by adsorption column.
2. Cooling process: The refrigeration cycle is completed by the compressor and the expansion valve. The compressor compresses the gas into a high temperature and high -pressure gas, and then reduces the pressure and cooling through the expansion valve to reduce the temperature of the gas and achieve the cooling effect.
Systems may also involve air heating process in some applications, especially when they need to rise. This equipment is widely used in industrial, pharmaceutical and food processing fields, such as producing pure oxygen and pure nitrogen, and food processing for cakes, chocolate, ice cream and other foods.
Air separation cold box leakage judgment and detection method
The leakage of air separation cold box can be judged through the following aspects
The main cooling liquid level continues to drop: This is the main sign of cold box leakage, indicating insufficient cooling capacity and difficulty in maintaining production.

Increased pressure in the cold box: Increased pressure and decreased tower pressure usually indicate a large gas leak, which causes internal pressure changes.

Cold air comes out of the gaps: When the cold box is not tight, a large amount of cold air flows out of the gaps, which is an obvious sign of leakage.

The base temperature drops significantly: Especially when low-temperature liquid leaks, the leakage can be determined by measuring the change in base temperature.

The frosted part is below the leakage point: the leakage causes the local temperature to drop, the water condenses to form frost, and frost appears below the leakage point.

By testing the purity of escaping gas or cold box seal gas, the type and extent of the leak can be confirmed. For example, nitrogen leaks can be identified by detecting that the nitrogen content in the air conditioner exceeds 80%, and oxygen leaks can be identified by detecting that the oxygen content exceeds 80%. These methods can help determine the cause of the leak so that repair measures can be taken.
