Nitrogen Generation Equipment
A nitrogen generator is not a single fixed package. Its performance depends on the separation method, required purity, flow profile, dew point, outlet pressure, and site utilities. This page explains how to evaluate nitrogen generation equipment by engineering fit rather than headline capacity alone.
Working principle
Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) uses compressed air and a carbon molecular sieve bed. Oxygen is preferentially adsorbed under pressure, while nitrogen passes through as product gas. Two beds alternate between adsorption and regeneration, giving continuous nitrogen output. Membrane separation uses hollow-fiber modules; oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor permeate faster than nitrogen, leaving an enriched nitrogen stream. PSA is usually selected for higher purity, while membrane systems suit lower-purity blanking and compact installations. These differences affect the layout, turndown, and operating behavior of nitrogen generation equipment.
Purity, flow, and energy: selection table
For nitrogen generation equipment, purity and flow must be read together. A higher purity target normally reduces usable capacity and increases purge demand. The table below gives typical selection ranges; final sizing should be confirmed by engineering calculation.
| Technology | Purity range | Flow range | Ambient temperature | Energy index | Key technical parameters |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PSA | 95–99.999% | 5–3,000 Nm³/h | 5–45 °C | approx. 0.25–0.45 kWh/Nm³ | Outlet pressure 0.5–0.8 MPa; dew point -40 to -60 °C |
| Membrane | 95–99.5% | 10–5,000 Nm³/h | 5–45 °C | approx. 0.15–0.35 kWh/Nm³ | Outlet pressure 0.6–1.0 MPa; compact module layout |
The energy index is not a fixed guarantee; it changes with purity, flow, inlet air quality, and control strategy. Temperature affects compressor efficiency and adsorption performance, so the ambient range should be checked against the actual site. Dew point and outlet pressure are also technical parameters that influence downstream filter and buffer requirements.
Industrial applications
Nitrogen is used for chemical inerting, food packaging, electronics assembly, laser cutting, pharmaceutical processing, metallurgy and heat treatment, oil and gas tank blanking, and additive manufacturing atmospheres. In these duties, nitrogen generation equipment should be matched to peak flow, average flow, purity tolerance, and intermittent or continuous operation. The application determines whether PSA or membrane separation is more suitable, and whether buffer storage or boosters are needed.
Certification, customization, and service
Certification support can include ISO 9001 quality management, CE marking where applicable, PED or ASME documentation for pressure vessels on request, and IEC-based electrical controls. Customization covers purity, flow, outlet pressure, dew point, skid layout, control interface, materials, noise treatment, and integration with existing compressed-air systems. Service scope includes utility data review, engineering selection, installation supervision, commissioning, operator training, spare parts, remote diagnostics, and preventive maintenance planning.
At Shenger Gas, the focus is on practical engineering alignment: inlet air quality, duty cycle, altitude, site temperature, and maintenance access are reviewed before final sizing. The information above is intended to help compare nitrogen generation equipment on technical fit rather than isolated numbers, with final selection confirmed through application data and engineering review.
