What is nitrogen and its forms?
Nitrogen is an inert, odorless, colorless element with atomic number 7. It accounts for approximately 78% of the volume of air in the Earth's atmosphere. Due to its inert properties, nitrogen can displace oxygen, which makes it widely used in various industrial and economic fields. Nitrogen exists primarily in two forms: gaseous and liquid.
- Gaseous Nitrogen: This is the most common form and is widely used in many fields.
- Liquid Nitrogen: Although relatively rarely used, it is vital in some specific applications. Liquid nitrogen must be stored at cryogenic temperatures (below -198.5°C), which requires specialized equipment. Although storage is complicated, liquid nitrogen is more suitable for transportation and storage due to its small size.
Industrial applications of nitrogen
The inert nature of nitrogen makes it a valuable resource in many industries. Here are some key applications:
Aerospace
Nitrogen is widely used in the aerospace industry, mainly for pressurizing industrial autoclaves and discharge pumps, as well as filling aircraft tires and life-saving equipment to ensure safety and prevent combustion and explosions.
Transportation industry
In the automotive industry, nitrogen is used to increase tire inflation efficiency and reduce internal oxidation, thereby improving safety and performance.
Chemical industry
In the chemical industry, nitrogen reacts with hydrogen to form ammonia, an important raw material for products such as fertilizers, dyes and explosives. Nitrogen is also used for liquid sample preparation in chemical analysis and to maintain an inert environment.
Energy industry
In the energy industry, nitrogen is critical to maintaining pressure, preventing gas leaks, and suppressing combustion. It plays an important role in the drilling, operation and maintenance of oil and gas wells.
Food industry
Nitrogen is used for food preservation and to ensure safe and hygienic packaging. In the wine industry it prevents oxidation, while in the beer brewing process it is used to pressurize beer kegs.

Liquid nitrogen is also used to make light bulbs and firefighting tools. In recent years, it has also been used in modern cooking techniques for innovative food preparations.
Nitrogen transportation and storage
The transportation and storage of nitrogen requires the use of specific systems:
- High Pressure Vessels: These vessels come in different sizes and are capable of providing a high pressure environment to effectively preserve gaseous nitrogen.
- Pipeline Network: In industries with high demand for nitrogen, pipelines transport nitrogen directly from storage locations to where it is needed.
