Nitrogen Generator For Chemical Purging

Every time a reactor, storage tank or transfer line is opened, air gets in. Oxygen and moisture follow, and with them oxidation, polymerisation, corrosion and - in solvent-rich areas - the chance of a flammable atmosphere. Purging with dry nitrogen is the long-standing answer. What is often underestimated is that the nitrogen should be produced on site, at the purity the process genuinely needs, rather than delivered as liquid and boiled off. Specifying a nitrogen generator for chemical purging is therefore less about buying a machine and more about matching a gas profile to a process.

How the gas is actually made

Most industrial units run on pressure swing adsorption. Compressed air passes through a vessel packed with carbon molecular sieve. Oxygen has a slightly smaller kinetic diameter, diffuses into the pores faster, and is held back, while nitrogen travels through the bed. Once the sieve is saturated, the vessel is depressurised and regenerated, and a second vessel takes over. Cycles are short - seconds to about a minute - so outlet flow stays continuous.

Membrane systems work on a different principle: hollow fibres let oxygen, CO₂ and water vapour permeate through the wall faster than nitrogen, leaving a nitrogen-rich stream on the retentate side. Membranes suit high flow at moderate purity. When the duty calls for 99.5 % and above, PSA is generally the better route, and the nitrogen generator for chemical purging should be selected with that split in mind.

Performance envelope

Energy is almost entirely consumed by the air compressor, which is why purity and flow always trade against power. Going from 99 % to 99.99 % roughly halves the available flow for the same compressor.

Supporting technical parameters: residual oil below 0.003 mg/m³, particulate filtration to 0.01 µm, PLC with touchscreen interface, pneumatic switching valves, inline oxygen analyser, dew-point transmitter, and optional Modbus or Ethernet remote access.

Tank blanking, reactor purging before start-up, pipeline displacement, solvent and monomer transfer, catalyst handling, flare header purging, packaging of oxygen-sensitive products, furnace atmospheres, and pneumatic conveying of powders. In each of these, a nitrogen generator for chemical purging is sized from the actual void volume and the number of air changes required - not from a nameplate figure.

Certification typically includes ISO 9001, CE marking, PED or ASME for pressure vessels, IEC electrical standards, ATEX where hazardous areas apply, and ISO 8573-1 air quality classes.

Skid or container mounting, duplex and redundant configurations, booster compressors, two-stage high-purity trains, stainless or carbon steel wetted parts, acoustic enclosures, cold-climate or tropical packages - these are engineering choices, not add-ons. Drawings are approved before fabrication, factory acceptance testing is documented, and commissioning is supported on site.

After commissioning

Operator training, spare-part kits, sieve replacement intervals, analyser calibration and remote diagnostics keep the unit within its design window. Purity drift is usually a sign of upstream air quality, not the sieve itself.
