Cryogenic Air Separation Liquid Nitrogen Plant
A cryogenic air separation liquid nitrogen plant works by liquefying air and then separating nitrogen from oxygen based on their different boiling points. This is not a new technology - it's been proven over decades in continuous industrial service. The complete system includes an air compressor, pre-cooling unit, purification skid, distillation column inside a cold box, an expander, and a liquid nitrogen storage tank.
The liquid nitrogen purity can reach 99.999%, which covers most demanding applications like electronics manufacturing, chemical inerting, food freezing, and metal treatment. We don't push fixed configurations. Each plant starts with your site conditions and purity needs, then we build the process step by step.
Working Principle & Key Components
The cryogenic separation process follows this path:
Air intake → Filtration → Compression → Pre-cooling → Purification (removing H₂O and CO₂) → Main heat exchanger → Distillation column → Liquid nitrogen output
Here's what matters inside the box:
- Purification system: Dual-layer bed design using molecular sieve + activated alumina. Automatic switching regeneration, no manual intervention needed.
- Main heat exchanger: Aluminum plate-fin type with multiple channels. Cold-end temperature difference controlled within 2°C - that's where efficiency hides.
- Distillation column: Structured packing or sieve tray, depending on your purity and energy targets.
- Cold box: Filled with perlite for insulation. Skid-mounted or field-assembled, depending on shipping limits.
The expander is a turbocharged type with efficiency no lower than 82%. It's the heart of the refrigeration cycle.
Core Parameters (Typical values based on 50 L/h liquid nitrogen output)
|
Parameter |
Value |
|---|---|
|
LN₂ purity |
≥99.999% (O₂ ≤5 ppm) |
|
Flow range |
30 – 2000 L/h (adjustable) |
|
Operating temp (cold box outlet) |
-196°C |
|
Start-up time (cold condition) |
≤4 hours |
|
Unit power consumption |
0.45 – 0.65 kWh/Nm³ LN₂ |
For a cryogenic air separation liquid nitrogen plant, energy use mostly comes down to two things: air pressure at the column inlet and pressure drop inside the column. Low-pressure process (0.45–0.55 MPa) uses less power but is sensitive to ambient temperature. Medium-pressure process (0.6–0.8 MPa) handles hot and humid sites much better.
Technical Data Sheet (Standard Configuration)
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Design pressure (air side) | 0.6 – 0.8 MPa |
| Design temp (cold box) | -196°C / +50°C |
| LN₂ storage tank volume | 5 – 200 m³ (on demand) |
| Cooling water consumption | Depends on compressor and pre-cooling selection |
| Control system | PLC/DCS with remote access |
| Footprint | Approx. 50–500 m², based on capacity |

Industrial Applications & Reference Cases (not our direct customers, just technical benchmarks)
-
Case A – Electronics
A semiconductor material supplier in eastern China runs a 200 L/h liquid nitrogen plant at 99.9995% purity. The nitrogen feeds a protective atmosphere for wafer cleaning. Operating pressure: 0.65 MPa. Annual power consumption: ~420,000 kWh.
-
Case B – Food Freezing
A frozen food factory in northern China replaced their liquid nitrogen supply (from cylinders) with an 80 L/h on-site plant. They use it with a liquid nitrogen spray tunnel. The unit has run over 8,000 hours without an unplanned shutdown.
-
Case C – Metal Heat Treatment
A heat treatment shop in southwestern China uses liquid nitrogen for cryogenic processing (-120°C to -150°C). They needed 99.99% purity. The plant added a secondary rectification section and holds purity at 99.998% consistently.

- After-sales: Guidance for cold box maintenance (perlite removal/replacement), tray replacement support, and remote troubleshooting.
The real value of a cryogenic air separation liquid nitrogen plant is predictable operating costs over time. We don't sell you the biggest numbers on a brochure. We match the process to your electricity rate, your required purity, and your physical space.
In cryogenic air separation, the design logic of a cryogenic air separation liquid nitrogen plant always comes back to mass balance and refrigeration balance - nothing fancy. Shenger Gas provides full engineering support from process package calculation to pipe stress analysis inside the cold box. We don't split the work into disconnected pieces or pass design risks to you. Every technical data sheet we issue is backed by a site visit or a thorough verification of your operating conditions. We believe the value of industrial equipment is written in long-term operation records, not on the cover of a product catalog.
