An air separation unit (ASU) is an industrial facility used to separate the atmosphere into its primary components (i.e., oxygen, oxygen, and in some cases nitrogen and other noble gases). These units typically consist of elements such as air amplifiers, air purification systems, basements, cryogenic cooling systems, and lower towers.

 

Cooling and liquefying pure gases requires a lot of energy

An air separation unit (ASU) separates pure gases from air by cooling it until it liquefies, then selectively distills the components at different boiling temperatures.

All cold process equipment must be kept within an insulated cold box enclosure, which contains the cryogenic heat exchanger, distillation column, and associated valves and piping.

Cryogenic separation processes require very tight control integration between heat exchangers and separation columns to achieve good efficiency. To achieve ultra-low distillation temperatures, the ASU requires a refrigeration cycle that operates via the Joule-Thomson effect. The cooling and separation of high-purity gases requires a large amount of energy for the refrigeration cycle to work efficiently.
